Deansgate, Manchester
Deansgate is Manchester's best known shopping street. Deansgate, more formally known as the A56, cuts across Manchester town centre from Manchester Cathederal in the north, and continues south, through central Manchester for around 1 mile as far as the Manchester Central conference centre. It is home to some of the City's most prestigious shops, bars, restaurants, shopping areas, entertainment venues and impressive buildings. For those looking for a more leisurely visit, Deansgate offers a pleasant walk with plenty of bars and coffee shops to make your journey more enjoyable. No discussion of Manchester Deansgate would be complete without mentioning two of Manchester's best known attractions. Manchester Arena, also known as the Manchester Evening News Arena (MEN Arena) is located next to Victoria Railway Station on the corner of Victoria Street and New Bridge Street. Not far is Manchester Cathedral, which is situated in Victoria Street. All three venues are found just on the northern edge of Deansgate. Victoria Street becomes Deansgate at the junction of Cateaton Street and Victoria Bridge Street Near the beginning of Deansgate is the Moon Under Water, (68-74 Deansgate) one of the country's largest public houses, occupying the premises of the former Deansgate Cinema. On the opposite side of the road is one of the entrances to Barton Arcade, a Victorian arcade with upmarket shops on the ground floor and offices above. Kendalls Department Store, (116 Deansgate) now known as House of Fraser Manchester, is a stunning art deco building with a very impressive presence on Deansgate. Across the road from the department store is Waterstones bookshop (91 Deansgate) central Manchester's largest bookshop. It provides a comprehensive selection of books including maps and travel guides over three floors. The store also includes a coffee shop. King Street, just off Deansgate is a prestigious shopping street with an attractive mix of premium quality clothes stores including Hermes, Armani and Thomas Pink. Forsyth Music Shop is located at 126 Deansgate, Manchester, M3 2GR. The store has a rich historical legacy and occupies all five floors of their building at Deansgate John Rylands Library, (150, Deansgate) is an impressive building completed in 1899 and built in the Victorian Gothic or Neogothic style. The Bentham Tower (sometimes called the Hilton Tower) (located at 301 - 303 Deansgate), at the junction of Liverpool Road and Deansgate. It is a massive skyscraper that dominates the local vicinity. It is one of Manchesters best known landmarks. The first 23 levels are occupied by a hotel which is part of the Hilton Group, with floors 25 to 47 being residential apartments. At the southern end of Deansgate there is Manchester Deansgate (or Knott Mill Station) a Metrolink stopfor Manchesters tram network, and this is located at the junction of Deansgate and Whitworth Street West. As Manchester's most famous shopping street, Deansgate has lots to offer and is a great place to start your visit to Manchester town centre, whether your trip there is for business or for pleasure, or a bit of both. |
