Rochdale is located around 10 miles north east of the City of Manchester. It is a densely populated industrialised metropolitan area consisting of slightly more that 200,000 people. However, it also has many areas of natural rural beauty. The town of Rochdale is the largest town in the Rochdale metropolitan area and it is home to around 95,000 people. Neighbouring townships include Heywood, Littleborough, Middleton and Milnrow, and the village of Wardle.

Rochdale’s fortune was built on the textile trade and the area’s canal network played a vital role in its economic prosperity. The canal system enabled cotton, textiles and raw materials to be transported around the country. Although the canals are no longer used commercially they are an important part of Rochdale’s recreation industry. There are canal side bars and restaurants next to the Rochdale Canal which runs for more than 30 miles between Sowerby Bridge in West Yorkshire and central Manchester.

Rochdale Town Hall is located near the centre of the town of Rochdale and is worth a visit. It is an excellent example of Victorian Gothic revival architecture and was designed by architect William Henry Crossland in 1871. The clocktower was designed by Alfred Waterhouse in 1887 after the original tower was destroyed by fire. (Waterhouse also designed Manchester Town Hall.)

The Rochdale Society of Equitable Pioneers established the first co-operative movement. The principles inspired by the Pioneers spread nationally and internationally and the movement inspired co-operative groups all over the world.

The Rochdale Pioneers Museum, is situated in the historical conservation area of Toad Lane, just outside Rochdale town centre.

Touchstones Rochdale is Rochdale’s the award winnng arts and heritage centre. It is located close to Rochdale town centre and is near Rochdale Bus Station and Rochdale Railway Station.
