One of Manchester’s newest and most interesting website is called Creative Tourist. This entertaining magazine style website focuses on the creative arts in Manchester.

CreativeTourist.com describes itself as ‘Manchester’s guide for the creative tourist’, but I think the website will be just as interesting to Manchester’s own arts and culture loving communities, of which there are many.

The website is split into a number of sections including news, features, art, and city guides. There is also a blog, photo-stories, a section called backstory which explains Manchester’s history and an arts news section.

All together I was particularly impressed at the depth and range of arts covered by the site. The site is developed to a high standard and covers a diverse range of arts media.

The site is edited by journalist Susie Stubbs, who amongst other things, writes the 2008 Manchester Blog Award winning, Travels With My Baby.

Creative Tourist was established by a consortium of 9 museums and galleries who got together to set up a website that promotes Manchester’s creative and artistic soul and its rich historical legacy. The website sums up its aspiration, as follows:-

“”………..We are rightly proud and passionate about this city of ours; we hope that, by reading about some of the things happening here, and finding out more about our outstanding historic collections, you’ll start to feel the same………..”

The nine organisations involved are listed below and they are the most higly respected arts and culture venues in Manchester. They are all well worth including in any visit to the City.

Cornerhouse, Manchester’s centre for contemporary visual arts and film
70 Oxford Street, Manchester, M1 5NH

Imperial War Museum North, The northern venue of this group of museums, located in various parts of England.
The Quays, Trafford Wharf Road, Trafford Park, Manchester M17 1TZ

The Lowry, which includes theatres and an art gallery that includes the work of Salford artist L.S. Lowry
The Lowry, Pier 8, Salford Quays, M50 3AZ

Manchester Art Gallery, possibly Manchester’s best known art gallery
Mosley Street, Manchester M2 3JL

The Manchester Museum, A museum that is part of the University of Manchester
The University of Manchester, Oxford Road, Manchester M13 9PL

Museum of Science & Industry (MOSI), The museum of Manchester’s scientific and industrial past.
Liverpool Road, Castlefield, Manchester, M3 4FP

People’s History Museum, a museum covering the history of working people in Britain, is currently under redevelopment and will reopen in late 2009.

Urbis, Manchester’s innovative exhibition centre of city life.
Urbis, Cathedral Gardens, Manchester, M4 3BG

The Whitworth Art Gallery, shows modern and historic collections.
The University of Manchester, Oxford Road, Manchester M15 6ER

There is a lot to celebrate about Manchester and the arts and cultural scene may well be the best outside London. So a site picking up the best of Manchester’s scene is long overdue.

Although, Creativetourist.com has only been up and running for a short time, it looks like its doing all of the right things.

If you are from Manchester, don’t be put off visiting because the site has been developed for tourists visiting Manchester. The site has lots to offer regardless of whether you are visiting or local.

Running alongside the Manchester International Festival is the Not Part Of festival which runs in venues around Manchester from 2nd – 18th July.

This is Manchester’s edgier, more down to earth, alternative to the ‘other Festival’ that is on at the same time, and is a celebration of Manchester’s creativity in a whole variety of different fields.

The organisers describe Not Part Of as

………fresh, eclectic, forward-thinking, Mancunian, open; a festival that elicits excellence and provokes thought…..

Looking at the events list you will see that this is certainly true. There are lots of different events on offer. The events programme has loads of opportunities to enjoy arts & crafts, theatrical performances, comedy and theatre – and lots more. Some events are free while others have a relatively modest entry fee.

Venues are mostly in the centre of Manchester and range from such as The Lass O’Gowrie to larger theater venues such as the Great Northern Amphitheater.

Full details of Not Part Of can be found on the festival website NotPartOf.org. You can also find a full listing of all Festival events here, where you will also find a link to download the Festival brochure.

Manchester Pride is back in Manchester from 21st to 31st August 2009. Manchester Pride is this city’s world famous annual celebration of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender life.

There are four elements to this years Pride. A schedule of exciting festival events, the Parade, the Big Weekend and the festival concludes with the HIV Candlelit Vigil.

Pride Festival Events – A great schedule of varied events are planned for the 10 day event covering comedy, music and theatre performances, sporting and health related events, cultural and film events as well as youth, family and women’s events.

Manchester Pride Parade – The Parade is perhaps the best known element of Manchester Pride. This central Manchester wide celebration of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender life starts at 1pm on Saturday 29th August. The parade starts at the corner of Liverpool Street and Deansgate. The parade will travel along Deansgate, and then turns right into St.Anne Street, then right again into Cross Street. It then turns into Princess Street and then travels down Whitworth Street, to the Gay Village, where the parade ends. The parade is watched by tens of thousands of spectators who line the parade route as decorated floats and teams of walkers wind their way through central Manchester.

Big Weekend – Another element of Manchester Pride is The Big Weekend which lasts from Monday 28th to Friday 31st August 2009 and includes music, partying, a lifestyle expo and village market and much more. Entertainment will come from a range of bands including The Freemasons, Peter Andre, Bananarama and Little Boots.

Please note that entry is strictly limited to ticket holders only and an early bird discount is only available on tickets bought up until until July 1st 2009.

HIV Candlelit Vigil – The HIV Candlelit Vigil on Monday 31 August, 9pm in Sackville Gardens, concludes Manchester Pride 2009. This moving ceremony includes a one minute’s silence to remember the people who have lost their lives world wide, to the virus.

You can find out more about Manchester Pride, including how to buy Big Weekend tickets, from the Manchester Pride Website.

Manchester is famous for its great nightlife. It is after dark that Manchester really comes alive. With so many places to enjoy there is something for everyone. Manchester’s nightlife attracts people from across the Greater Manchester area. Manchester has a growing reputation that the wide selection range of pubs, bars, restaurants and clubs that is available is the best outside London.

With hundreds of venues in Manchester city centre alone and many hundreds more across Greater Manchester there is no shortage of choice.

Here is a very brief introduction to whats on offer:-

Food and drink – If there is one thing Manchester is not short of is places to eat and drink. The problem is not where to start but when to stop. Why not start your journey in the trendy, Northern Quarter, and then move on to the student hangouts around Oxford Street. Canal Street is a vibrant destination popular with Manchesters gay community. Deansgate Locks is another area well served with bars and restaurants. The whole of central Manchester is well served with restaurants with Chinatown in the town centre, and the curry mile in the Rusholme area of the city, being very popular with Manchester residents as well as city visitors.

Music – In the late 1980s and early 1990s Manchester house and acid music scene was known nationally and internationally and Manchester’s most famous night club was The Haçienda. Things have changed a lot since then but Manchester’s music scene is still domainated by a wide variety of music venues playing different types of music. Unsigned bands play at venues across the city. Musical legends play at the Apollo and Manchester Evening News Arena. For something a little more mellow why not visit Matt and Phreds Jazz Club.

Theatre – With theatres of all size and performances to suit all tastes, in the City, there is something to suit every theatre fan. From the Palace Theatre and the Opera House showing world famous performances, to smaller local theatres in Manchester and across the Greater Manchester area.

Comedy – The Comedy Store and the Frog and Bucket are just two of the many comedy venues in the city.

Clubbing – Manchester world famous club scene is an ever changing, vibrant mix of dance, indie, pop and alternative clubs.

With so many so many things going on at so many different venues there is something for everyone.
