The town of Bury is easy to get to by public transport. The Metrolink tram service runs from Manchester and terminates in the town and there are Metrolink stations at Prestwich, Radcliffe and Whitefield. There are also a number of bus services that are in operation across the Metropolitan area connecting all the principal towns there with Manchester. However, there are no rail services from Manchester to Bury.

Bury has a wide range of shopping opportunities, events, tourist sites and interesting things to see and do. Why not try the following to start with:-

East Lancashire Railway is a preserved heritage railway, which seeks to re-create railway scenes from the past. The railway runs diesel and steam services through the year. The line runs from a base in a railway station in Bolton Street, Bury. The railway’s route runs north to the villages of Ramsbottom and Rawtentall and east to Heywood.

The Met is a very populat arts centre in Market Street, in Bury town centre. It has two theatres and a cafe. The venue has a weekly programme of theatre, music and comedy events. The Met is located in Derby Hall, a Victorian building designed in the neo-classical style.

Bury Art Gallery and Museum is situated on Moss Street in central Bury. It is home to a fine art collection made up of Victorian and 20th century art, including works by world famous artists such as Turner, Constable, Landseer.

Bury is home to the football club Bury FC, also known as The Shakers. The team has a very strong following locally. The team is based at a 11,840 person capacity stadium at Gigg Lane, Bury, Greater Manchester, which was built originally, in 1885.

The Met is one of 200 venues that applied to participate in the scheme and it was one of only 99 successful applicants.

The scheme will be launched by the Met during the week commencing Monday 16th February, 2009. Tickets will be allocated on a first come, first served basis, and some restrictions do apply.
